About Esnagi
Land Acknowledgement
We at Mar Mac Lodge Wilderness Resort acknowledge that we are on the traditional territory of the Ojibwe, Cree, and Oji-Cree People in the Robinson-Superior Treaty area. We recognize the long history of First Nations and Métis Peoples of Ontario and show respect to them.
We especially wish to express gratitude to Mother Earth and for the resources we are using, and honour all the First Nation, Métis and Inuit people who have been living on the land since time immemorial.
We are aware that our settler acknowledgment uses language which may differ from language used by First Nation, Métis and Inuit people. We understand that language is fluid and living, and we respect this diversity. We are also aware that not all First Nation, Métis and Inuit people refer to themselves in the same way.
Esnagi Lake
Esnagi Lake is accessible only by air or rail resulting in an unspoiled wilderness setting and ensuring high quality fishing and wilderness vacations. The lake sits north of Wawa and East of White River in beautiful Algoma Country, Northern Ontario. Esnagi is part of the Great Lakes Basin and is about 45 kilometres (28 mi) long and 5.0 kilometres (3.1 mi) wide. The primary inflows are the Magpie River from Mosambik Lake at the north end of the lake, Tripoli Creek on the west side, and other unnamed creeks. The primary outflow is also the Magpie River, which flows downstream from the south end of the lake and eventually into Lake Superior.
Esnagi Lake is a world class fishery boasting healthy populations of walleye, northern pike, perch, and whitefish. A short portage away is Rock Lake. Rock Lake gives some added variety with its brook trout population.
The spectacular scenery and sunsets on Esnagi Lake are renowned. Exploring the lake in our gorgeous 18 foot cedar strip boats, or by canoe or kayak is a relaxing and nostalgic way of experiencing the pristine Northern Ontario wilderness. Due to its remote nature, wildlife abounds. The landscape is a wonderful combination of pristine forest and rocky outcrops. There are a few sand beaches to enjoy, many hidden bays to explore by canoe or kayak, and wildlife trails to traverse by foot. The opportunities for enjoyment are endless for both fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
Getting Here
Most Mar Mac adventures begin in White River, Ontario. White River is a one-day drive from Southern Ontario and major cities in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Regardless of where you start, your final leg of the drive will be along one of the most beautiful routes in Canada.
There are many sites to behold; the shimmering waters of Lake Superior, long empty beaches, towering pre-Cambrian rock faces and stunning views of the mountainous boreal forest region. It will take your breath away. For the adventurous of heart we can point out places of interest for you to stop to go hiking and exploring this beautiful region.
Once you get to White River you will make your way to Esnagi Lake via White River Air’s Seaplane Base or the Via Rail Train Station. After seeing the landscape from the highway, you will now get a different look at the real Northern Ontario. Experiencing a short flight over the pristine forest in a float plane will be a memory you hold forever. Alternatively, getting off the highway and onto the railway with Via Rail’s Budd Car service is a whole new way to experience the wilderness.
For those who simply can not begin a vacation in White River, Via Rail will give you the option to hop on the train from as far away as Sudbury, Ontario. Enjoy a relaxing full day train ride knowing that when you arrive at Swanson (Mileage 88 on the CPR) we will be there to greet you and transfer you directly to the lodge.
