Big news! To encourage Ontarians to explore their own backyard, our provincial government has introduced the Ontario Staycation Tax Credit. You can claim the credit on your personal Income Tax and Benefit Return for 2022. We want to help explain how this will work for those who are choosing Mar Mac Lodge vacation packages.
The Ontario Staycation Tax Credit is a refundable personal income tax credit. Ontario residents may claim 20 per cent of their eligible 2022 accommodation expenses as long as they lived in the province by Dec. 31 of this year.
You can claim expenses of up to $1,000 as an individual or $2,000 for a family of at least 2. Claiming this maximum amount will result in a credit of $200 as an individual or $400 as a family.
You can claim the Ontario Staycation Tax Credit for accommodation expenses for a leisure stay of less than a month in Ontario at a short-term accommodation or camping accommodation, such as Mar Mac Lodge.
This means the accommodation portion of any Mar Mac package will qualify. To help Ontario residents, we will be breaking down the package price on their invoices to show the accommodation value. If you are planning several trips throughout the course of the year and want to know the amount you will be paying towards accommodations on any of our packages, please do not hesitate to contact our office and we will gladly give you the info you require.
Please note:
The tax credit only applies to leisure stays between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 this year regardless of the timing of payment for the stays. The tax credit does not apply to business travel.
The accommodation expenses must also:
- have been paid by you, your spouse or common-law partner, or your eligible child, as set out on a detailed receipt
- have been subject to Goods and Services Tax (GST)/Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), as set out on a detailed receipt
- not have been reimbursed to you, your spouse or common-law partner, or your eligible child, by any person including by a friend or an employer.
